Brake pads, kevlar vs sintered...
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:37:04 PM »
Right, so after another set of new pads turned to mush in that good old yorkshire mud i've decided a change is in order...

anyone tried superstar Kevlar pads? how are they in mud? or should i just go sintered?

Heard they're a good mixture between sintered and organic, i.e, they will stop you well in the wet but last longer then one ride.
Conversely though, they wont last THAT long or stop you as well in the dry as sintered

i think thats what someone told me!?!?!   ???

well the tempation is to go sintered on my old discs and then one day in future buy some new discs, cos mine are a little bent, (anyone riding with me over summer will have heard my jimi hendrix impressions) that i'll just use w/ organic...

I have tried them, they didn't last very long and didn't work too well in the wet. They were good on dry days.

Superstar sintered are far too hard and hence lack power.

SS organic are very soft, plenty of power but very limited life.

In tried them(kevlar) 1 dry ride...brilliant,1 wet ride and they died.I put a review on the SS site and they basically replied with "no good for the Peak District in wet conditions"
SS sintered on the other hand are IMO good.I've had no problems with them in 2 years.Perfect for where i ride, last well and stop well. They outlasted stock Avid pads and i'm now using them in my Hopes 8)

After 18 months trouble free use of SS sintered pads i decided to give kevlar a go in my Juicy Ultimates.Unfortunately a combination of the wet and good old Dark Peak grit ate the pads after 1 dry and 1 wet ride.I'll continue with sintered from now on.
One good point,on the 1st ride(dry)they were brilliant.

Superstar Edit: I have to agree with you for Peak District use Sintered is the way to go. The rock type is millstone grit and as the name implies it is very abrasive. Use the hardest pads possible!

kevlar pads are awesome.. i get through 3 months on one set on the front, and i haven't changed the back in a year.

they seem to have alot more power than the standard hayes pads too.

I'd probably use them again if we had a long dry summer as in the dry they were very good.

Even in long dry periods I'd still go for sintered.

Exactly.
Nothing eats pads/chains/cassettes like the Dark Peak Millstone Grit  ::)

i dunno.. cannock chase has wrote off a set of hayes pads in 1 ride, as the sand and s**t gets everywhere.
