MBR routes
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:59:18 AM »
After our 'interesting' bog snorkelling/hike a bike ride in Nidderdale I was talking to a guy I know who reckons (and Ibbo is of the same mind) that the feckers don't ride half the routes they print.

Seems a bit wrong to me. Wouldn't be so bad but it was in another guide book as well ::)

Were we just unlucky or does this happen to others?

Dunno, but I fell off in a stream at Wharncliffe last night as well. Getting to be a theme!

I rode the Nevis loop featured in MBR a few years ago and got that impression as well, some of the route was just superb other bits i was walking up steps with the bike and in a few places it was stupidly unrideable, unless i read the route wrong...... ::)

They must have a use- ie to get you out there... But as ever in magazine land there is only so much you can print before you end up going over the same stuff again...
Autumn issues will always feature winter clothing- same in the walking mags as well as the cycling... Winter issues will start to feature lighter clothing looking forward to spring... With a big feature on lights, have actually got to the point certainly with WMB that I wont be renewing my sub, especially as they seem to put most of the mag on BR at some point anyway.
What we rode in the bog-fest was bridleway, but the most unused one I ever saw!

I doubt that they ride them, they're mostly by reader submission.

The Glen Ample route was about 13 miles according to them, I measured it at over 20.

They also printed a Pentlands route twice, a few months apart, and graded it differently each time.

Yet another reason why I don't subscribe or read it anymore.

i was looking forward to trying the Maul famau loop that was in this months MBR mag, hope it isnt the same as what you guys have found, however im quite open to the possibility that some of the good trails might have hike a bike sections, the only problem is if the hike a bike out weighs the ride a bike! and i share the view with some other fourmites that the more natural the trail feels the better the experiance so a bit of hike to get to those otherwise unreachable bits just adds to the natural feel of the ride.

But yeah agreed, there can deffo be toooo much hike a bike bits.

But maybe as mentioned alot of the trails are reader submitted and i suppose the editor or what ever only has their words and information to go by, maybe they should investigate the submitted trails before putting them to print??

Hope you're right... It'd be about the only thing that makes me keep the sub going... The mag is fine, but I get fed up seeing what I paid for on the web site a few weeks/ months later...
